Jonathan Kane is an artist and photographer who lives and works in Naples, Florida. After pursuing undergraduate art degrees from the University of Florida and the San Francisco Art Institute, he embarked on a 15 year career in the financial industry before returning to his Florida roots to pursue art.
Jonathan's interest in photography developed early on in high school. After graduation, he was a society photographer for the Naples Star newspaper. With a long time interest in portraits and the raw human figure, Jonathan adds color and texture to delve deep into the highly emotional imagery of his pieces. Kane does not plan his pieces before the creation process- he allows them to freely develop and come into existence entirely on their own.
Although he is currently on dialysis and on the waiting list for a kidney transplant, he is still active in creating and showing his art.
Even though I am a photographer, I have always been more influenced by painting and multimedia art. I strive to create images that are surreal and mysterious, but grounded in human emotion and my own experiences.
I spent 30 years creating black and white photographs on film in a documentary style but I never felt as free to express myself as I do now. It's never been my intention to create a particular narrative in my work. I want to produce imagery that gives a glimpse into the way I feel. My work is based on formal associations which open a unique poetic vein. Multi-layered images arise in which the fragility and instability of our seemingly certain reality is questioned.
There is a transformational power in the act of creation. By bringing more beauty into the world, the world becomes more enriched and meaningful both for me, the artist and hopefully the viewer.
